Senior Director of Workforce Development
Reports To: Chief of Staff
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Location: 330 W. 24th Street, Baltimore, MD 21211 (on-site, with occasional remote days)

Position Summary
The Senior Director of Workforce Development will report to the Chief of Staff and shall be responsible for all efforts to recruit, retain, support, and advance all BTT staff as we work collectively to increase Baltimore’s urban tree canopy. The primary role of the Senior Director is to oversee Workforce Development, and Career Pathways. The Workforce Development Director will partner with members of the leadership team to support the success of BTT’s employees and ultimately the success of the organization.
The Senior Director of Workforce Development’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Workforce Development Strategy
- Develop and oversee Baltimore Tree Trust’s workforce development strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry workforce needs
- Lead the design and implementation of structured career pathways for Neighborhood Forestry staff in collaboration with the Chief of Staff
- Track workforce outcomes, including credential attainment, promotions, and job placement opportunities
- Identify opportunities to expand workforce programming through partnerships, training initiatives, and industry collaboration
- Collaborate with staff, community, business, and industry to increase job placement and work-based learning protocols
Training and Skill Development
- Support Neighborhood Foresters in work-based learning to acquire skills relating to Urban Forestry through educational and certificate programs along with hands-on training
- Coordinate educational opportunities including industry certifications, equipment operation training, arboriculture education, and other relevant professional development programs
- Partner with external training providers, trade schools, and educational institutions to expand workforce training opportunities
- Ensure Neighborhood Foresters have access to hands-on learning experiences aligned with urban forestry and environmental stewardship careers
- Track and evaluate participation in training and professional development programs
Career Pathways and Professional Development
- Track all Professional Development including, approvals, budgets, and follow-ups
- Work closely with all Neighborhood Foresters on their career pathways development
- Manage and strengthen the Neighborhood Forestry career ladder, supporting advancement from entry-level positions through leadership roles
- Maintain and expand professional development opportunities for staff across departments
- Support initiatives that help staff transition into long-term careers within the green industry
Supportive Services and Staff Success
- Maintain a list of wrap-around, additional support, and general services to support staff
- Maintain partnerships with community organizations that provide resources such as financial literacy training, transportation assistance, and other support services
- Support staff in accessing educational and professional development resources that promote long-term career success
Organizational Collaboration and Support
- Coordinate with Development team on program budget, performance tracking, and grant reporting as appropriate ● Serve as a member of BTT’s Leadership Team to ensure the success of the organization
- Collaborate with Neighborhood Forestry Director to ensure workforce development programming aligns with operational training needs
- Attend occasional Board of Directors meetings and provide updates on workforce initiatives
- Represent the organization on external committees and working groups
What We’re Looking For
- At least 5 years’ experience with Workforce Development, program management, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience
- Experience working in the environmental and/or non-profit sectors
- Excellent communication skills, including writing, public speaking, confidentiality, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences in both positive and negative circumstances
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects
- Strong managerial experience developing goals, strategy, leading projects, and directing staff
Compensation
$36.05 to $40.86 per hour, $75,000 to $85,000 annualized (commensurate with experience), including some required weekend and evening events

Planting Manager

Position Summary
The Planting Manager plans, implements, oversees, and supports planting crews who perform tree-planting projects as BTT works to increase and maintain Baltimore’s urban tree canopy. This includes providing logistical assistance and guidance, ensuring proper project tracking, assessing sites for future projects, and evaluating completed work for quality assurance/control purposes.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Crew Supervisors, Crew Leaders, Neighborhood Forestry Technicians
The Planting Manager’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Planting Operations
- Design plans, perform site assessments, and develop operations projects for tree planting, with a focus on the right tree in the right place, including concrete removal and stump grinding throughout Baltimore City by scouting and using GIS.
- Coordinate day-to-day logistics of tree planting projects year-round.
- Oversee Crew Supervisors in the assessment and documentation of the quality of tree planting projects and coordinate with Crew Leaders to remedy any issues in a timely manner.
- Ensure tracking of daily, weekly, and seasonal performance metrics for all tree planting projects to refine operations and delegate project assignments to Crew Supervisors.
- Oversee Crew Supervisors and Leaders in field operations ensuring daily meetings with crews to include detailed reviews of next day locations, tasks, schedules, truck assignments, required equipment, tools, supplies and water.
- Ensure enforcement of all established safety and operational policies.
- Document and report incidents involving crews.
- Coordinate site damage response and repair coordination.
- Oversee operations team Supervisors during spring and fall planting seasons to support summer tree care operations in collaboration with the Tree Care Manager to ensure that operations run smoothly and goals are met.
- Oversee the use of GIS Assessment Leaders to locate plantable sites during the summer months.
Fleet & Facilities Management
- Oversee management of daily fleet operations and logistics (trucks and cars), ensuring vehicle availability, regulatory compliance, safety, tracking and scheduling of routine and situational maintenance, and efficient resource allocation to support organizational needs.
- Manage purchasing and ordering processes, maintaining inventory control systems.
- Manage facilities, grounds, and equipment needs, ensuring tools, equipment, and supplies are fully stocked and in working order.
Team Management
- Build trust among entire crew by providing clear direction and support.
- Monitor crew members’ achievement of day-to-day numbers and goals in support of performing bi-annual performance reviews in conjunction with the Director of Neighborhood Forestry.
- Monitor, verify, and approve time sheets for all crew members, including timekeeping reminders and tracking of overall attendance and daily whereabouts.
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new crew members.
- Manage disciplinary issues of crew members.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the physical and community-facing nature of planting work.
- Support volunteer participation through interaction with and incorporation into planting projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 3 years of experience working in arboriculture or working in the environmental field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience
- Proven ability as an effective people leader and supervisor
Ability to make practical field decisions - Proven administrative experience with data entry, document management, correspondence, scheduling, and office operations
- Proven experience managing purchasing and ordering processes, maintaining inventory control systems, overseeing fleet vehicles and equipment
- Confident communication skills, including writing, public speaking, and interacting with crew members, volunteers, residents and organizational partners
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects
- Proficiency with G-Suite, comfortable learning new software
- Familiarity with and ability to work well with diverse teams in the Baltimore area and its neighborhoods
Working Conditions: Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Physical Demands: Physically able to stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds.
Licenses and Certifications: A valid driver’s license; CPR/First Aid/AED required or must be obtained within 90 days. Treekeeper training is a plus.

Neighborhood Forestry Technician I (NFT I)
𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗼: Director of Neighborhood Forestry
𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Wage: $18.00-18.50/hour
We are currently looking to identify motivated, hard-working individuals to join our tree installation and tree care crews. Successful candidates will have a strong willingness to learn new professional skills while working outdoors, as well as an interest in creating positive environmental change in Baltimore City neighborhoods. Forestry Technicians can expect to receive on-the-job training and industry-recognized certifications, in addition to a wide range of educational and professional development opportunities.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝗗𝗼:
- Install container-grown, balled-and-burlap, and bare root tree specimens
- Water, mulch, and prune young and mature trees alike
- Load, unload, and transport trees of various condition and size
- Safely operate power hand tools, saws, pruning loppers, etc.
- Assist in maintaining an inventory database and tracking system for all tree plantings
- Participate in workplace training events and occasionally oversee volunteers
- Assess trees for signs of common tree pests and health conditions
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿:
- At least 18 years of age
- Positive attitude and eagerness to learn
- Physically able to stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Demonstrated ability to report for work regularly and punctually
- Good teamwork and communication skills
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months, is preferred
Compensation
$18.00-18.50/hour
Employees are eligible to receive performance bonuses, wage increases, and other benefits after a 240-hour probationary period.
